Correction — safe-search figures are being re-measured
In August 2026 we found that our safe-search detection was checking the wrong hostnames for three search engines — Ecosia, Yandex and Brave. Ecosia's in particular pointed at an address that doesn't exist, so it could never be recorded as enforced no matter which resolver was tested, which held every provider's score down.
The content-blocking percentages below are unaffected, but the safe-search percentages came from that faulty code and should not be relied on until we publish a re-run. The detection has been fixed. We would rather flag this than leave numbers up that we can't stand behind.

ControlD Family Friendly - The Customizable Option

Cloudflare for Families - The Performance Paradox
While Cloudflare offers excellent global performance and reliability, it ranks last in family protection with only 68.4% blocking and weak 42.9% safe search enforcement. It's more suitable for basic content filtering than comprehensive family safety.
Testing Methodology
Our comprehensive testing evaluated each DNS provider across multiple dimensions:
Website Blocking Tests (500 sites per provider)
- Adult content websites - From Hagezi and StevenBlack blocklists

Safe Search Enforcement
We check whether the resolver rewrites each search engine to its forced-safe-search endpoint. Seven engines are tested:
- Google, YouTube, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yandex, Brave Search and Ecosia
We do not test Yahoo or Baidu. An earlier version of this page said we did — that was wrong, and the claim has been removed.
Grading System
The grade is a single 0–100 score, split evenly between blocking and safe search when both are tested. Each half awards points on a band:
The combined score maps to a letter: A+ ≥ 90, A ≥ 80, B+ ≥ 70, B ≥ 60, C+ ≥ 50, C ≥ 40, D ≥ 30, otherwise F.
Note on the grades below: an earlier version of this page described a different rubric than the one the testing tool actually applies, so several published letter grades did not match what you would get by running the tool yourself. The rubric above is the real one. Because each grade depends on the safe-search score, the letters shown in the rankings will be recomputed once the safe-search re-measurement described at the top of this page is complete.
