What this test can and can't tell you
It can tell you
- · Whether some DNS filtering is active on this device
- · Whether ad and tracker domains are being blocked
- · That a filter you believed was on is, in fact, off
It can't tell you
- · Which resolver you're using — that needs a lookup we can't do from a browser
- · Whether safe search is enforced — browsers can't inspect DNS answers
- · How thorough the filter is; five domains is a smoke test, not a survey
Two things that can skew the result. A browser ad-blocker (uBlock Origin, AdGuard extension) blocks the ad and analytics probes itself, which looks identical to DNS filtering — so treat a blocked ad probe as “blocked by your browser or your DNS”. And the adult, malware and phishing probes are synthetic test domains, so a provider that filters real content thoroughly may still let them through if it hasn't categorised them.
We deliberately don't probe real adult or malware sites. On an unprotected connection — exactly the case this page exists to detect — that request would succeed, and we are not going to put that in your browser history to prove a point.
